Completed in 1715 while under the employ of the Vatican, Scarlatti’s Stabat mater stands out as one of the most imposing products of its time.
Using an astonishing array of ten vocal parts, the Stabat mater is distinguished by its lush sonority and powerfully expressive harmonies. Rautavaara’s Magnificat, receiving its Australian premiere in this concert, is a work that alternates passages of mystic calm with scintillating free textures. Górecki’s Totus Tuus, certainly his best-known and most acclaimed work for acappella choir, is music of singular beauty and hypnotic power.
Also in this program of music meditating on the mysteries of Mary are gems by Mouton, Josquin, Victoria and Grieg.
