As 2017 approaches we’re excited to announce another bumper year ahead–and that our season tickets for 2017 are now available

Here’s our lineup for 2017.

The Little Match Girl Passion – 9 April

The centerpiece of our first concert for 2017 is David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2008. Gloriana is presenting the Melbourne premiere of this remarkable work.

The Little Match Girl Passion blends together Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale with texts from the Gospel According to St Matthew into a compelling and profoundly moving musical journey.

This programme also includes other works by Gesualdo, Liszt, James MacMillan, and John Tavener.

Spem in Alium – 18 June

Tallis’ mighty 40-part motet Spem in alium is a watershed moment in music history and the opportunity to hear forty individual voices surrounding the audience is a singularly thrilling experience.

Tallis’ masterpiece will be woven into an all-English program that includes Byrd’s Tribue Domine, Sven-David Sandström’s hair-raising completion of Purcell’s Hear My Prayer, O Lord and music by Harris, Howells, Britten, Jonathan Dove and others.

Fauré Requiem – 24 September

Fauré’s gentle, consoling Requiem caught the public’s imagination from its first performance in 1888.

Described by the composer as expressing ‘a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest’, the Requiem touches the heart with its melodic beauty and mellow, autumnal orchestration.

The Cantique de Jean Racine, composed when Fauré was nineteen, unveiled the composer’s melodic gift to the world.

Also in this program –  Poulenc’s sparkling, ebullient Mass in G and a rare performance of Daniel-Lesur’s Le Cantique des Cantiques.

Baltic Brilliance – 19 November

This program brings together works by pre-eminent Baltic composers of our time. Uģis Prauliņš, in his Missa Rigensis reinvigorates the Ordinary of the Mass by bringing in folk music influences, improvisation and a unique approach to building choral textures.

Arvo Pärt’s Salve Regina moves us through its statuesque simplicity. The lush harmonies of Ēriks Ešenvalds music bring colour and emotion to the exquisite miniatures Stars and Evening.

This programme also features music also by Pēteris Vasks, Veljo Tormis and Vytautas Miškinis.
