Rachmaninoff Vespers: Sunday, 19 June

Composed in less than two weeks early in 1915, Rachmaninoff’s Vespers stands as the crowning achievement of the Golden Age of Russian Orthodox sacred choral music.

Using fifteen major psalms and hymns associated with the Easter Vigil and plainsong melodies taken from a variety of sources, the Vespers is a monumental work that elevates the spirit by its lofty expressiveness and captivates the ear by its sheer beauty.

Among his own works, Rachmaninoff referred to the Vespers as one of his favourites. Today, it is one of the most cherished of all choral works. Join us for this special performance of the Rachmaninoff Vespers – the second concert in our 2016 subscription season. We look forward to seeing you there.
