Gesualdo Tenebrae: Gloriana and the St Peter’s Eastern Hill Choir

On Good Friday, 25 March, at 8.00pm Gloriana Chamber Choir in collaboration with the choir from St Peter’s Eastern Hill will be presenting their annual Good Friday performance of Tenebrae.

This year’s service will feature responses by sixteenth-century Mannerist composer Carlo Gesualdo and end with our annual performance of Allegri’s much-loved Miserere Mei Deus.

More about Tenebrae

The service of Tenebrae, which is the matins and lauds for the last three days of Holy Week, has traditionally been held at St Peter’s Eastern Hill as one combined service.

It is an atmospheric devotional service in which a special Tenebrae candelabrum, known as a hearse, has all thirteen of its candles extinguished–representing Christ and his Disciples–as darkness encroaches on the interior church, symbolising the anguish of Christ’s Passion but also the hope of renewal in Easter.

The service consists of psalms, chants and lamentations as well as the sung responses.
